Pride Talks Back Success

July 27th, 2010

A great evening in the Europa Hotel.

Senator David Norris delivering the Amnesty International Belfast Pride Lecture, followed by Pride Talks Back, when Norris joined local politicians and the Rev David McIlveen of the Free Presbyterian Church on a panel – chaired by the BBC’s William Crawley – to answer questions from an audience of several hundred people, mostly from the local LGBT community.

So, what did we learn?

Ireland, north and south, is “nearly there” in terms of achieving equality for gay people, according to Senator David Norris.

Rev David McIlveen thought that some of those involved in the protests against the Belfast Pride parade were motivated by hatred of gay people. He distanced himself and his church from such sentiments (they hold a separate protest) and condemned violent homophobic attacks.

Basil McCrea MLA supports the right of gay couples to marry. I think. It was a “politician’s answer”.

Anna Lo MLA wasn’t aware that people in the LGBT community wanted the right to have civil marriage, not just civil partnership. She asked people to follow up with her so she could learn more about the issue. Last year at the same event, her party leader David Ford (now Minister of Justice) said he didn’t support gay marriage.

Conall McDevitt MLA would like the SDLP to have a policy of full equality before the law for LGBT people. It currently doesn’t (on civil marriage) but he predicts that they will.

Bairbre de Brún MEP and Anna Lo made clear that there were children in care who needed adoptive parents and that gay couples should be able to offer a home with just as much legal right as straight couples. (Rev McIlveen had asserted there was a waiting list of parents waiting to adopt children and therefore there was no need for gay people to be involved in adoption).

Basil McCrea revealed the worst kept secret in Northern Ireland politics – that he is campaigning to be leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.

Did Basil McCrea think his appearance at Pride Talks Back would help him in this campaign to be leader of the UUP? No.

Senator Norris on Basil McCrea: “not my type”.

Rev McIlveen thinks that gay men should be able to donate blood (unlike the current practice of the UK Blood Transfusion Services).

Bairbre de Brún said that if she had been aware of the blood donation ban when she was Health Minister, she would have addressed it.

Whatever the gains for gay rights at home, we must stand up for those in other countries persecuted because of their sexual orientation: David Norris (and me!).

Bairbre de Brún’s gay hero from history: Roger Casement (said with a laugh). Anyone know any other Irish Republican gay icons?

David Norris reckons that if Rev McIlveen is going to quote the Old Testament on homosexuality, he should be consistent on scripture and support stoning for adultery and the selling of daughters into slavery.

Basil McCrea thinks the LGBT community should be tolerant of people in Northern Ireland who don’t support equality for gay people. They needed to be given time to “catch up”.

Senator David Norris’s gay hero from history: Plato.

Conall McDevitt’s gay hero from history: David Norris!

Rev David McIlveen’s gay hero from history: none that he was aware of (but there could well he people he admired who happened to be gay).

Rev David McIlveen has more bottle than Northern Ireland’s largest party, the DUP, which yet again failed to provide a representative to participate in the Belfast LGBT community’s annual politics event. Maybe one year soon, the DUP will have someone there. Who will be the first?

McIlveen Joins Pride for Talks Back

July 25th, 2010

July 21st, 2010

//// PRESS RELEASE \\\

Belfast Pride, Ireland’s LARGEST lesbian, gay and transgender festival has welcomed the local endeavours of two motoring enthusiasts as they attempt to raise funds for local charities through the most strangest of ways.

The TopQueer boysLittle Fiat Big Adventure are raising Funds for a range of charities including the HIV Support Centre and the Northern Ireland Hospice by doing a ‘Drag Race’ in an old Fiat Panda that was bought for just 100 pounds!

Jim Magill & John Eltham will be visiting 7 cities in 7 days and getting 7 Drag Queens to donate an item of Drag that Jim will wear in the Belfast Pride Parade. As this seems like some sort of escapade that Jezzer, May and Hamster would undertake on ‘Top Gear’; this challenge has been named the ‘TopQueer’ Drag Race!

Jim is no stranger to automotive adventures as he has driven his panda from San Francisco to Istanbul via the Sahara in Africa and Nordkapp deep in the Arctic.  So far these Little Fiat Big Adventure’s have raised over £8000 for charity.

John and Jim wanted to time this year’s fundraiser in conjunction with the Pride celebrations to prove that the LGBT community can contribute positivity to society in light of recent comments by certain local Politicians.

The ‘pit-stops’ for the ‘Drag Race’ are:

Sat 24 July – Glasgow / Edinburgh

Sun 25 July – Manchester

Mon 26 July – London

Tue 27 July – Brighton

Wed 28 July – Cardiff

Thu 29 July – Dublin

Sat 31 July – Belfast (for the Belfast Pride Parade)

Will this be an adventure too much for our intrepid explorers as they raise funds while attempting to put together the ultimate uber chic drag ensemble? Or will it look like the FIAT crashed through a charity shop window?

Come along on Saturday the 31st of July and see the Panda in the Pride Parade as John chauffeurs Jim, resplendent in his fabulous drag outfit.

Wasteland – a new film premiere for Belfast Pride!

July 14th, 2010
They say that there are just six degrees of separation between everyone on earth. If that’s true then our every action must have an impact far beyond what we can ever imagine.

That’s the theme for a stunning new film from Northern Ireland writer and director Kerry Rooney. “Wasteland” tells the story of six teenagers whose lives overlap over the course of a single Saturday. The film deals with a raft of modern issues from sexuality to survival. Ultimately it is a story about fate, luck, circumstance and the decisions that blur the lines between what makes us good or bad, right or wrong, living or dead.

Made entirely in Northern Ireland with a local cast and crew Wasteland is a movie not to be missed.

Belfast Pride would like to thank Kerry from Kaleidoscope films for giving us the chance to premiere this fantastic film at the Festival.

Wasteland is on in the White  Box cafe, Hill Street, Belfast on Thursday 29th July at 8pm.

This is a separate event to the published Women’s Night
