Watch it here – We held our Pride Talks Back Election Special on Friday 15th April – find out what the politicians had to say as we marked the record number of LGBT candidates standing in the 2016 Assembly Election and made history by bringing together five LGBT Assembly candidates as part of our six strong panel.
The debate was hosted by journalist, Allison Morris with support from journalists Amanda Ferguson and Brendan Hughes and the event also featured information stalls from LGBT community groups Gender Jam, SAIL, Here and the Rainbow Project, rights group SO-ME as well as the political parties.
We asked all the panel members about what motivated them to become actively involved in politics and stand for election before moving on to debate a wide range of Equality and wider election issues. The debate generated a huge reaction online, trended on Twitter and generated some promises from politicians that we will make sure are kept.
The panel members were:
Alliance – Chris McCaw (Foyle)
Green Party – Malachai O Hara (North Belfast)
PUP – Sophie Long (Upper Bann)
SDLP – Connor Duncan (North Antrim)
Sinn Féin – Michael Gray-Sloan (South Down)
UUP – Rodney McCune (South Belfast)
